When Do Kittens Lose Their First Teeth

Right around 3 months of age the deciduous teeth start to fall out and are replaced by adult teeth. Most kittens lose their baby teeth between the ages of 6 and 9 months. Kittens start losing their baby teeth around 9 weeks of age and from that time until their adult teeth are fully grown in at 5 to 6 months you can count on lots of chewing action. Around 4 7 months of age permanent adult teeth will start replacing the baby teeth. Around three weeks of age their kitten teeth will begin to erupt. Long before their first birthday your growing kitten should have 30 permanent teeth.

Kittens are born without teeth. You may never even see the teeth as your kitten loses them as they are often lost during mealtime or through play. Cats begin losing their baby teeth at around 12 weeks or 3 months. Most of us acquire our kittens around 10 to 12 weeks of age or even a bit older.

Just like with human children the timeline for losing kitten teeth is pretty flexible. The adult incisor teeth are the first to come in around 4 months. At around 4 weeks of age the canine teeth fangs have emerged and by 6 weeks of age the premolars have emerged. After going through the first and second phase of kitten teething the whole teething period ends typically when the kittens are about six to seven months old.

Although the timing varies between animals as much as it does among humans the average kitten will have lost all her baby teeth by between 6 and 9 months old. At around 2 weeks of age the little incisors at the front of the mouth begin to show through the gums. By the time a kitten reaches six to seven months all of their 30 permanent teeth should have erupted. A kitten generally starts losing teeth at 3 months around the time her adult incisors begin to slowly grow in.

However this is not a hard and fast rule. By the time a kitten hits about 6 months old she usually has all 30 of her adult teeth. If your kitten has all her adult teeth and all four molars she is likely at least 7 months old. Some kittens may lose their baby teeth earlier and some may lag behind a bit.
