Weaning Kittens Vomiting
If the kitten is vomiting blood or if vomiting persists for several hiurs or is accompanied by other symptoms such as diarrhea appetite loss a distended abdomen or if the cat is listless then it could be due to several conditions which require immediate attention from a veterinarian.
Weaning kittens vomiting. The kitten may lack appetite and have also diarrhea. Pyrantel given at two and four weeks of age usually prevents roundworm and hookworm issues. The initial consistency should be similar to oatmeal. You may begin by just introducing a small teaspoon of wet food mixed with the formula which allows the kitten to acclimate to the new proteins and flavors.
If this is the root cause the vomiting should eventually subside. Serve kitten milk replacer in a shallow bowl. To make a gruel mix a ground high quality kitten food with the milk replacer. Do not use cow s milk as this will cause stomach upset and diarrhea in some kittens.
Many people use a blender to mix their cat food with the milk replacer. The kitten may throw up undigested food or transparent liquid. Dip your fingertip or the syringe or bottle the kitten is used. Symptoms can worsen in several hours.
An often overlooked cause of vomiting is a change in a cat s diet. Other symptoms will vary depending on the underlying cause but may include. Blood in stool fever loss of appetite dehydration lethargy vomiting pain frothy foul smelling stool. Premature weaning onto wet food may also cause diarrhea as the body may not be ready to absorb the new proteins and complex nutrients found in meat.
Kitten vomiting will cause excessive salivation. Always deworm a kitten with diarrhea. If you ve recently started to wean kittens and you see diarrhea for more than 2 bowel movements scale back and put them on a simple diet of formula to see if the body just needs more time to adjust. If you ve recently changed your cat s food added new foods or even started a course of feline medication nausea and or indigestion may result.
In some cases there may be blood in the vomit which is an alarming sign. You may also choose to offer the kitten a slurry a mix of formula and wet food which is used to help transition the kitten from one food to the other. After weaning give fenbendazole for three days to control giardia and remove any resistant round and hookworms that were missed. How you can help a vomiting cat.
Parasites are the number one cause of loose stools in kittens of any age. You can introduce your kitten to this gruel and other moist foods around five to six weeks.
